QA Tester (Junior - Mid)

Join our QA team and make sure what we ship to real payments platforms works, and keeps working.

Quality Assurance

Portsmouth office

Full-time

About Us

OpenByte builds and operates a payment infrastructure and CRM. Our platform routes transactions across dozens of payment processors and provides customer-facing order forms and support sites. By taking on the complexity of payments and billing, we free companies to concentrate on their own products and customer journeys without that burden.

The Role

You'll join our QA team, working alongside our existing test and engineering teams to make sure what we ship works, and keeps working. Our products process real payments for real merchants, so a missed bug isn't just an inconvenience. It can cost our customers money.

You'll test new features and releases across the OpenByte console, our consumer order form pages and checkout, our APIs, and the CRM itself. You'll also help grow our automated test coverage.

We're hiring at junior to mid level. If you're earlier in your career, we'll invest in teaching you test automation and the payments lifecycle. If you're more experienced, you'll take more ownership of automation stakeholder management from the start.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Testing new features and bug fixes against any customer needs and requirements, before and after release

  • Writing clear software changes and bug reports that developers can act on quickly

  • Exploratory testing to find the edge cases nobody thought to write down.

  • Testing payment flows end-to-end using processor sandboxes and test cards, including card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay, 3D Secure, refunds, and recurring billing

  • Testing REST APIs directly with tools like Postman, and checking responses, error handling, and data

  • Building and maintaining automated tests for the browser, APIs and in App, and helping keep them reliable in CI

  • Device specific testing on physical hardware, with a view to automate this process

  • Regression testing ahead of releases, and helping define what "ready to ship" means

  • Cross-browser and mobile testing, with an eye on usability and accessibility

What You'll Need

  • Some commercial or real world experience in software testing or QA, or a strong interest in it backed up by personal projects, a course, or a related role

  • A methodical, detail-oriented approach, and genuine curiosity about how things break

  • Clear written communication. A good bug report is a skill, and you'll write a lot of them

  • Strong verbal communication and reasoning skills.

  • Comfort with web applications and browser developer tools

  • A basic understanding of APIs (HTTP, JSON, status codes)

  • Familiarity with Git, or willingness to learn it quickly

  • Context switching at short notice to meet the demands of the business

What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience with test automation tools (we use Playwright, Selenium)

  • Some scripting or programming in TypeScript/JavaScript, Python

  • API testing tools such as Postman.

  • Experience testing payments, e-commerce, or other financial systems

  • Basic SQL for checking data in a database

  • Understanding of CI/CD and how automated tests fit into a delivery pipeline

  • An ISTQB Foundation certification (welcome, not required)

What We Value Beyond Technical Skills

  • Clear communication: you'll need to explain your decisions to engineers and leadership alike, and not be afraid to explain yourself if challenged.

  • An equal focus on automation and manual process testing

  • Willingness to own problems end-to-end rather than pass them between teams

  • Pragmatism: knowing when something is good enough and when it needs to be bulletproof

Working Pattern

  • Based in our Portsmouth office because most of our best work happens when the team is in the same room.

What We Offer

  • Structured support and mentoring to grow your test automation skills

  • Qualifications & training specific to your role if you want to pursue it.

  • Exposure to a real payments platform, and a domain that's valuable for your career

  • A visible role where you have direct influence over the quality of what ships

  • We provide individual catered lunches every day. For free.

  • Of course we have a pool table, it's right next to the darts board.

  • Private healthcare from BUPA Health & Dental.

  • Netflix and Spotify are on us. Binge away.

  • We end the week with Friday drinks at the office bar.

  • Food and Drink allowance at select locations up to £200 per month

  • £50 per month in shopping vouchers
